The Aglianico de Vulture is known as "Barolo from the south of Italy" and in the 2014 vintage was an excellent red wine from Italy. Unfortunately, it is far too little known. But the Aglianico grape doesn't always make it easy to be loved. It can show strong tannins and the acidity of this grape is not entirely without. We can counter this, however, with the fact that it is one of the oldest grape varieties in Italy, comes from Greece and can mature into great red wines, especially on volcanic soils in Campania and Basilicata. One only has to accept that Italy’s strength actually lies in the many autochthonous grape varieties still preserved. A wine from Tuscany, for example, which is modern and vinified from the Bordeaux grape varieties according to international cut, should demand distance rather than great dedication from every lover of Italian red wines. In contrast, an Aglianico is the honest variant. With a few years of maturity, things really get going here.
