For twenty years Goethe had already dealt with the phenomenon of color when, in 1810, he published his two-volume major scientific work "Zur Farbenlehre". In the context of intensive work on this summary of his findings and observations, in November 1809, he developed a scheme that connects two circles to an allegorical representation of colors and human soul forces. The original (pen with ink, watercolored, diameter 6.9 cm) is in the Frankfurt Goethemuseum.
Goethe's color circle is today the most well-known part of his color theory.
