From 18 to 20 August 1820, Berlin sculptors Christian Daniel Rauch and Christian Friedrich Tieck had simultaneously (a tempo) modeled their portraits of the seventy-one-year-old Goethe in his Jena garden apartment. In contrast to the bust of Tieck, which was initially forgotten, the bust of smoke soon enjoyed lively interest and great esteem.
Even Goethe himself was very fond of Rauch's work. "I am very satisfied with Rauch's bust ... The treatment of the bust is really terrific and will therefore look great in every size." Today, the bust of smoke is considered the epitome of the late Goethe due to its closeness to life.
