With the comfort of a lounge chair and the functionality of a dining chair, HAY's reproduction of Poul M. Voulter's J110 offers an equal level of aesthetics and functionality. Long bars on the back and curved armrests make for a welcoming look. Made in lacquered solid beech and available in different colors.
Paul Volther is a Danish designer and educator (at the Danish Design School) responsible for a number of remarkable mid-century furniture designs, including chairs, armchairs and sofas. Trained as a carpenter and furniture designer at the Arts and Crafts School in Copenhagen, he was a major representative of Functionalism and focused on applying artisanal techniques to high quality materials. He was employed as a designer at the FDB in 1949 and later became the head of design. FDB is the Danish Consumers Cooperative Society, better known as Coop. The FDB furniture division played a crucial role in the industrial revolution in Denmark, it was founded in 1933 and in 1942 Børge Mogensen was appointed design director. His groundbreaking approach was driven by the desire to create a simple, elegant and practical design for mass consumption. During his time at FDB, Volther developed a range of products now produced by HAY, the three-legged J107 chair and his interpretation of the Windsor chair, the J110.
