The occasion and origin of the piano fantasy in E major op. 15 is little known. Presumably, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed them within the time frame of his first trip to England, which he undertook in 1829. The piano composition is based on the song "Tis the last rose of summer" based on the poem of the Irish poet and ballad singer Thomas Moore (1779-1852). The original of the manuscript is kept in the Goethe-Schiller-Archiv Weimar.
