Our fresh cold-pressed organic poppy seed oil is a vegetable oil derived from the small seeds of the opium poppy. In the past, monks cultivated the poppy, made medicines for pain and insomnia, and used the resulting oil as lamp oil. Today, however, it is mainly used in the cold kitchen because of its intense nutty taste. It goes well with muesli, yoghurt, ice cream, shakes, dressings and baking. It is colorless to pale yellow (white poppy seed oil), almost odorless with a pleasant taste.
Poppy seed oil consists of about 11% saturated fatty acids, about 17% monounsaturated fatty acids and about 72% polyunsaturated fatty acids. Since it should not be heated above 170 degrees, it is only partially suitable for frying and baking.
