Between 1803 and 1805, under the direction of the head building director Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray, an extension was built on Iniative Goethe, which connected the library with a medieval tower of the former city fortifications. The tower itself was converted from 1821 to 1825 into a book magazine to make room for the rapidly growing book inventory. Inside the tower was built an old spiral staircase from the Weidaer Osterburg, whose spindle is made of a single oak trunk.
