Details
A nice and practical storage box for small things. This wooden box was made by hand in southern Colombia and decorated with the Mopa-Mopa technique.
This technique, also known as “barniz de pasto”, is one of the few handicrafts that have survived from the indigenous people of this region.
The Mopa-Mopa resin is obtained from a shrub that grows in the Putumayo department in the Colombian jungle. Twice a year the plant produces a gelatinous paste that is turned into a thin film through a traditional heating process.
The surfaces of various wooden objects are decorated with the Mopa-Mopa resin panels. This phase requires precision and skill because mistakes are almost impossible to correct. The craftsman develops the design while manually gluing the resin sheet onto the object.
